Lower back pain is more common among adults than you might think. However, occasional lower back pain due to a long day at work or strenuous exercise might not be a cause of worry. But if the pain is sudden and debilitating, you should seek proper treatment to address the condition. Here are the most common causes of lower back pain.
1. Bad posture or weak core muscles
Lower back pain can result from having a bad posture while standing or sitting down. If you are someone who tends to lean too far back or slouch too much, you can have sudden lower back pain.
So, if your doctor has been telling you about a bad posture for some time now, you need to start listening to him after understanding your back pain reasons. Also, try to exercise daily to strengthen your core muscles, and you will feel less pain.
2. Sprain or strain as back pain reasons
The lumbar spine has to do a lot of work daily. So, a lower back strain or sprain can occur from severe injuries due to movement and work. Maybe you fell accidentally or tried to lift a heavy object. Maybe you were playing sports. Any of such activities can cause a sprain or strain. If you already have a bad posture and weak core muscles, the chances of sprain or strain increase further.
3. Herniated disk
The lumbar and thoracic spine of an adult has seventeen bones stacked over one another. There is a cushion-like disk present between every set of vertebrae that absorbs the pressure placed on the bones. There is an inner gel and an outer rind for every disk.
If the inner gel squishes or slips beyond that outer rind, it causes pressure on the surrounding nerves. It can be one of the lower back pain reasons. The slippage can be due to age or accidental trauma.
4. Damages to the facet joint
The five vertebrae that make up the lower back are connected by the joints known as the facet joints, which experience a large amount of compressive stress and force daily. If the cartilage in these facet joints breaks down over time, it can lead to back pain for gents and ladies. One of the most common causes of damage to these joints is osteoarthritis, which can lead to stiffness, inflammation, and eventually extreme pain.
The pain might intensify even more if the facet joints start impinging on a nerve. It leads to a condition known as sciatica.
5. Compression fracture
A compression fracture is one of the back pain reasons for gents and women, whereby, a lumbar spinal vertebra collapses. Though such a collapse can result from accidents and trauma, the most common cause is osteoporosis. Such a collapse can put you in severe pain and limit spinal mobility. The pain is unbearable in such cases and needs immediate attention from a doctor.
If one lumbar vertebra starts slipping forward and comes over another vertebra, it puts a lot of pressure on the lumbar disk that separates these two vertebrae. A deteriorating lumbar disk continues to cause lower back pain. Finally, the compression force becomes so intense that the lumbar disk starts flattening from the force, which leads to sciatica and nerve damage. Even if there is a small fracture at a young age, the pain is usually felt much later in life.
7. Spinal stenosis
Stenosis of the lumbar spine is the narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back, which puts pressure on the roots of the nearby nerves. Several causes are attributed to spinal stenoses, such as thickening of ligaments, bone spurs, or the degeneration of the lumbar joint or disk.
If the roots of the nerves are compressed, it might be one of the back pain reasons for gents and ladies. Spinal stenosis can lead to sciatica, which causes the kind of pain that radiates from the lower back.
There is a natural curvature of the spine – it looks like an ‘S’ when viewed from the side. The upper back curves backward and your lower back curves forward. However, due to some reason, when the natural curvature of the back changes, it can lead to extreme pain in the lower back.
In most cases, scoliosis does not need any medication as treatment. However, you need to see a doctor to understand how to manage the condition.
