What Is the Role of Music in the Montessori Classroom?

One of the first reasons why parents prefer Montessori schools over other education systems is their unique approach towards the natural development of children.

The implementation of Montessori school education revolves highly around five fundamental principles – the absorbent mind, respect for kids, prepared environment, auto-education and sensitive periods.

Apart from these fundamental principles, Montessori schools incorporate music as an integral part, too.

Well, we understand you may have your fair doubts about music in combination with education. But trust us; music can help in more than just helping your kid express him/herself non-verbally. It can enhance academic performance.

1- Music in Montessori school helps with kid’s brain development

As mentioned before, Montessori schools revolve around five fundamental principles – one of which is sensitive periods.

By customizing the music instructions to coincide with sensitive periods, it becomes possible to stimulate the kid’s nerve connections between brain cells that help with cognitive development.

2- Helps with effective non-verbal communication

Even though children are full of emotions, they sometimes lack the skills to properly and accurately express those emotions.

And as we know that music is, time and again, used to express feelings without having to directly express the emotions; the same tactic can be used by kids, too.

Instead of simply crying and yelling, your kid will be able to express his/her emotions more productively.

3- Inclusion of music in IB school helps with problem-solving and creativity

Compared to other things, arts and music have a positive impact on students’ reading skills, writing skills, math skills and even self-esteem.

With arts, kids are compelled to think beyond patterns and formulas. They gain the ability to navigate through things, and the same ability is used by them to navigate relationships in the workforce and personal life down the line.

Besides, arts is also associated with problem-solving and creativity. This gained skill can be used in both academic and general life.

4- Enhances the overall academic achievement

Music study is indirectly linked with academic achievement, too. For instance, music lessons help with speech processing and eventually reading. Learning to play an instrument can have an even greater impact on speech processing.

Taking music lessons can also enhance one’s listening skills in IB school, therefore helping in the way he/she processes language. And we all know that the enhanced ability to process language can directly impact the literacy rate.

5- Music makes your kid feel good

Many adults plug their earphones in and play their favorite music whenever they are experiencing certain kinds of emotions. The same can be seen in kids too.

Listening to music that one loves helps in the release of dopamine in the brain – this is the same chemical that makes a person feel good.

Even babies tend to react to happy music. If you notice someone breathing faster after listening to music, then that is a tell-tale sign of happiness in physical form.

In short, playing, learning about or getting exposed to music helps kids appreciate music early in life, meaning he/she will have a tool to feel good and happy.

 Over to you

Both IB school and Montessori school are known for their unique educational system. The incorporation of music only boosts their unique approach towards your kid’s development.

So, instead of doubt, make sure to work with your kid’s teacher to determine how music has impacted your kid’s development so far.
